Dear Kids,
By the time you’re reading this, the world will likely be unrecognizable from the one we’re living in today. Perhaps robots will tidy your room (lucky you!), and AI will answer your every question faster than I ever could. But no matter how advanced technology becomes, there are some truths about life that will never change.
Your mom and I grew up in middle-class Indian families. We left home to chase opportunities—first for college, then for work—and eventually found ourselves building a life together here in the United States. Along the way, we’ve learned lessons about what really matters, lessons we want to pass on to you.
This letter isn’t about defining “success.” Success is a slippery word—it means different things to different people, and that’s okay. What we hope for you is something deeper: a life that feels meaningful, content, and surrounded by people (and maybe robots? 😉) that love and care for you.
What shapes your life more than anything else is your mindset—the lens through which you see challenges, opportunities, and relationships. A mindset is like an internal compass; it helps guide your decisions and reactions no matter where life takes you.
Mindset is a set of attitudes, beliefs and cognitive frameworks that influence how individuals perceive and respond to challenges, learning and life experiences.
Over the years, we’ve come to believe there are four core mindsets that can help anyone navigate life with purpose and resilience. We call them: Foundational Mindset, Connected Mindset, Builder Mindset, and Balanced Mindset. These aren’t rules or rigid principles—they’re ways of thinking that can adapt to whatever future you find yourself in.
These are lessons we wish someone had shared with us when we were younger (though knowing my stubborn 20-year-old self, I might not have listened!). That’s why we’re writing this now—to create a digital time capsule that might guide you when you need it most.
Let’s dive into these four mindsets together…
Foundational Mindset – Shaping Your Inner Self
This mindset is your anchor when life gets messy. It’s about cultivating the attitudes and beliefs that keep you steady, no matter what challenges come your way.
Believe in Yourself: Confidence and humility go hand in hand. Trust in your abilities, but stay open to learning from others. Remember, you’re capable of amazing things, but the world is bigger than any one person.
Live in the Moment: Learn from the past and plan for the future, but don’t let either steal the joy of today. This moment is all you truly have control over—cherish it.
Be Purpose-Driven: Focus on the why behind your actions rather than just the results. You can’t always control the outcomes of your actions, but if you’re clear on why you’re doing something, you’ll stand by your decision—even if things don’t go as planned.
Bounce Back: Life won’t always go as planned. Failures and setbacks are inevitable, but resilience and adaptability will help you rise stronger each time.
Practice Gratitude: Focus on what you have and take for granted rather than what you lack. Gratitude keeps you grounded and helps you find joy even during tough times.
Connected Mindset – Shaping Your Relational World
No matter how advanced technology becomes, relationships will always be at the heart of a meaningful life. This mindset is about understanding your role in a shared world and building connections that matter.
Balanced Selflessness: Take responsibility for the roles you play in life—whether as a son, sibling, partner, friend, or citizen—but never at the cost of your own well-being. True generosity comes without expecting anything in return.
Be Open-Minded: People are shaped by their unique experiences and backgrounds. Practice active listening and make an effort to understand others’ perspectives before forming judgments. Be open to changing your views about someone (in both directions) as you learn more—it’s a sign of growth and empathy.
Partnership: The relationship with your partner will likely be one of the most important in your life. Unlike family ties that you’re born into, this bond is a choice. It’s a partnership built on mutual respect, adaptability, and shared growth. This relationship is special because it creates new and future family ties. As your needs and desires evolve, so will this bond. Embracing change and supporting one another through life’s ups and downs will keep it strong.
Builder Mindset – Shaping Your Physical World
This mindset is about creativity, problem-solving, and taking action to shape the world around you. In a future driven by AI, having an entrepreneurial spirit will be more important than ever.
Ask Why: Never stop being curious about how things work or why they are the way they are. Curiosity fuels discovery and innovation.
Think Clearly: Develop critical thinking skills and abilities to connect seemingly unrelated concepts to thoughtfully arrive at solutions. Make decisions balancing long-term consequences with short term needs.
Create Boldly: Machines can replicate what already exists, but only humans can imagine something entirely new (at least as of this writing 🫣). Whether it’s art, ideas, or solutions—create boldly.
Balanced Mindset – Shaping Your Practical World
This mindset is about shaping your day to day habits so that you can lead a mindful life. Balance across physical, mental, emotional, financial, and spiritual well-being will help you thrive.
Physical Wellbeing: Prioritize your health—eat well, move your body, and rest when needed. Simple habits like cooking or gardening connect you to life’s basics and bring joy.
Mental Wellbeing: Build routines that keep you focused and calm amidst life’s chaos. Learn to take things one step at a time when feeling overwhelmed.
Financial Wellbeing: Financial literacy gives you freedom later in life. Start small, save early and learn from mistakes while the risks are low. Always live below your means!
Spiritual Wellbeing: Life’s meaning isn’t found in achievements alone; it’s discovered through reflection on what truly matters—whether through faith, nature, or quiet introspection.
Closing Thoughts
These aren’t just words; they’re pieces of who we hope you’ll become as adults. The world will always change in ways we can’t predict, but these mindsets will always guide you through whatever comes next. Remember that we are all mortal human beings on this journey called life—full of ups and downs, continuously learning and adapting.
Ultimately, what matters most is that you live a meaningful life filled with purpose, joy, and love.
In future letters, we’ll dive deeper into each mindset individually—exploring the habits to practice, skills to develop; books, movies, songs that inspired us; people who shaped our thinking; and practical ways to apply these ideas in everyday life.
The world may look very different by the time you read this letter—but these mindsets—and the love we have for you—will always remain.
Love,
Mom & Dad
